What are the two ugly words I’m referring to? Weight Loss. It’s an ugly thing in our society. I see two forces pulling me in different directions. On one side is the news and the media, telling me that obesity is a rampant problem and making life hard for me because I’m overweight. On the other side is this movement that seems to say “I’m fat. Get over it.” They say that women are beautiful in all sizes and shapes and we shouldn’t try to conform to any standards. Then in the middle are the people who promote health and happiness. As long as you’re healthy it’s all ok.
The Problem
Let me be clear. I don’t have body image issues. I do want to be smaller but I don’t hate my body the way it is. I’m also not unhealthy, but everything points to the inevitability that I will be unhealthy if I continue to maintain this weight.
Let me be clear on another point. I’m not talking 15 or 20 pounds here. I’m talking closer to 100 pounds that I could stand to loose. I’m 5’4″ and weigh a little over 250 (I say a little over because I haven’t actually stepped on a scale in a while and I don’t know for sure).
No matter how you slice it, I need to loose some weight. It puts me at a higher risk for countless diseases and conditions. I’ve already got problems with my knees and carrying weight only makes it worse. It’s likely that one of the contributing factors to my infertility issues is my weight. Let’s also throw in the fact that shopping for clothes can be very difficult because I have to go to specialty stores. Doing things like flying are very uncomfortable because I don’t fit in the seats very well.
The Solution
The solution for me, and your mileage may vary of course, is to set realistic, achievable goals with short term goals to keep me motivated. Duh, I know. Some people think that overly ambitious goals will motivate you to reach farther than you might not have otherwise. “Aim for the moon and even if you miss you’ll be amongst the stars.” That’s fine in theory, but in practice I get overwhelmed if I try for too much. If I start small, the success encourages me and I’m more likely to keep going past that small goal.
I also have to change things slowly. I’ve done the thing where I change everything overnight, extreme diet, exercise, all at once and it doesn’t work for me. I wind up miserable and overwhelmed and quit before I’ve gotten anywhere. This time, I’m going to change one thing every 2-3 weeks.
The Goal
I’m starting out with a smaller goal. My goal is to get below 200 pounds in the next 12 months. My goal for the next 2 weeks is to go to the gym for 30 minutes of cardio 3 days each week and to bring my lunch to work every weekday. I’m going to put some progress bars up on the side bar to keep me accountable.
Feel free to share your goals with me and we can encourage each other!!

*cheer* That’s what did it for me, unquestionably. It was a slow path (though it sped up once I reached “critical mass”) but I was much happier with it than I would have with cold turkey.
Small changes snowball and small effects snowball, too.
Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help, aside from pompom waving!

Pompom waving is much appreciated!

I feel silly waving pom-poms, but I’ll stand and cheer!
I could easily stand to lose 50 lbs; saw a picture of myself the other day, taken around 1986-87, and (even though I’ve had a bit of a beer belly since graduating from college) I looked positively svelte. Of course, I was running 3 miles or so a day, three or four times a week back then, too. My biggest problem is I’m exercise-averse, so while my diet is fine, simply eating properly isn’t going to cause the weight to drop.
Not that I’m going to be running half-marathons with two of my sons, but some exercise would be a good thing.

Maybe take that lovely wife of yours on a walk a couple days a week while the weather’s nice. Well, it’s not so nice here but I bet it’s tolerable there

*\o/* pompoms!
<3<3 Woohoo!
Count me in for the pompom team! =) Obviously I’ll help in any way I can, and that includes if you need a buddy to take a walk or if you just need some moral support. Call me ANY TIME.
Thanks! Your emails are a really cool idea, I’m liking them.

Let me add my support as well! The one thing I’ll throw out there is that you may want to find some sort of physical activity you really enjoy for its own sake (not just as exercise). I, for instance, wouldn’t enjoy running/jogging for its own sake, but I’ll play sports all the time. I play soccer and tennis these days (ultimate frisbee more in the past), and I’ll play them poorly, thank you very much. If you are very focused on the aerobic aspect of your activity, then you do have to make sure you’re pushing yourself hard throughout the activity to maintain that heart rate!

/manly pom-poms!
Thanks Justin! That’s not a bad idea, I’ve been thinking about getting a bike for a while now and I might do that when the weather cools off a little. It’s way to freaking hot to even think about right now!

I’ve done 2 books that were really helpful to me in terms of weight loss. One was insanely difficult; one’s been super easy. I’ve lost about 30 lb overall. The first is called “12-Day Body Shaping Miracle”; link is http://amzn.to/qZ2ZLf The second is “The Four Hour Body”; link is http://amzn.to/qpBwxu.
Second guy (Timothy Feriss, author of “The Four Hour Work Week”) says the most important thing is to eat a lot of protein within 30 minutes of waking. I do an egg white powder in milk for like 35g of protein every morning. But read the book for lots more tips. He talks about how to lose fat via diet, exercise, and supplements. Interesting stuff.
And I’m definitely on the pom pom squad. Woot!

I’ll have to check those out.

Hehe, when you put it like that, it sounds so obvious why it doesn’t work, hey! But so many people try it and fail, and keep trying it and keep failing. Your small goals sound SO much more sensible and maintainable
I’d second Justin’s point about finding an enjoyable physical activity. Team sports are the only way I can motivate myself to run around and enjoy it (maybe I have a dog-like chasing requirement? MUST CHASE DISC >_<). A team of people expecting you to turn up each week certainly makes it so you can't back out on a whim!
But anyway! Keep us updated

“MUST CHASE DISC”
LOL! If I could find a sport that required absolutely no running I might consider it. I’ve got asthma and running is a little out of my reach right now. Hopefully I’ll be able to work my way up to it!
